During the first 2 weeks after the quake struck, Yakkum’s units conducted a program called Crisis Phase Intervention. Within the crisis phase the main focus was on saving lives and decreasing the risk of permanent disability. The activities conducted were emergency clinical service and treatment for incoming and referral patients, outreach service to isolated villages through mobile clinics, transition posts for returned patients, logistical support, tarpaulin or tent provision, general healthcare for affected people and internally displaced persons (IDPs), and advocacy and networking to fulfill the rights of affected communities.
After the crisis phase, the next phase is Post-Crisis Intervention where the objective is to ensure the effectiveness of post-operative treatment, prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the camps, responsive care for the most at risk groups (such as children) and enhancing the capacity of people to recover from tragedy through community organizing. In this phase, we carry out several activities such as advocacy to fulfill the rights for the victims, mobile clinics and home-nursing for the released hospital patients, mental health care through children’s centre, water and sanitation by building public latrines, and psycho-social programs for permanently disabled people. All programs will be done over the course of 3 months.
The continuation of the post-crisis intervention phase is rehabilitation and development phase that will be based in ten affected communities. During this phase, the affected communities are expected to be self-reliant communities and will conduct recovery efforts without depending on outside aid. NGOs and the government will only facilitate the acceleration of their recovery process.
