Keep Promoting Age-Appropriate Feeding for Infants and Young Children to Prevent Stunting
The National Strategy for Improving Breastfeeding and Complementary Feeding recommends appropriate feeding practices for infants and children aged 0 to 24 months. This includes: Early Initiation of Breastfeeding within the first hour of birth; exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months; introduction of complementary foods starting at six months; and continued breastfeeding up to 2 years or beyond. According to the 2021 Basic Health Research, the early initiation of breastfeeding rate in Indonesia is 48.6%, meaning that more than half of newborns do not receive colostrum—the first breast milk rich in nutrients and antibodies. Meanwhile, data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2023 shows that 73.97% of infants under six months receive exclusive breastfeeding, an increase from 72.04% in 2022. Infant and Child Feeding practices help prevent undernutrition and malnutrition. How can families with children aged 6 to 24 months be equipped with the knowledge needed to provide exclusive breastfeeding and prepare appropriate complementary foods at home?
