A Trans Activist’s Journey for Legal Recognition

The inequality experienced by transgender women results in limitations for them in fulfilling their fundamental rights, one of which is access to identity documents. The low rate of identity document ownership hinders them from continuing their education, thereby limiting their opportunities for formal employment. Advocacy for identity documents for transgender women is a long struggle that has been carried out by civil society organisations (CSOs) in Yogyakarta City. What is the battle like for a transgender woman to obtain identity documents? And what challenges do they face?
